PE

Vision

At Seaford Primary, we want our children to be able to engage meaningfully in a wider range of physical activities as part of the Physical Education curriculum, and beyond.  The aim is for them to leave the school willing and able to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.

Importance of PE

Physical education is vital in developing the children's knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.  These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor adventure activities, through the curriculum and wider sporting opportunities.  Physical education promotes and understanding in children of their bodies in action.  It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.  Thus, we enable them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.

PE at Seaford Primary School

The aims of the PE curriculum are:

- to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

- to ensure children are physically active for sustained periods of time

- to engage in competitive sports and activities

- to ensure all pupils lead healthy, active lives

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in PE lessons.  Our principal aim is to develop the children's knowledge, skills and understanding and we do this through a mixture of whole-class teaching and individual/group activities.  Teachers draw attention to good examples of individual performance as models for the other children and we encourage the children to evaluate their own work as well as the work of other children.  Within lessons, we give the children the opportunity both to collaborate and to compete with each other, and they have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources.

We aim to provide opportunities for children to participate in competitive and non-competitive events, which may be individual or team based in nature.  We do this by offering a wide range of sport competitions and events for all children outside of the curriculum, meaning there are opportunities for everyone if they feel ready to challenge themselves.  These opportunities give the children a chance to experience sport on a more competitive level, whilst also developing their confidence and competence.  The competitions also help the children foster a sense of team spirit and co-operation- a vital skill for life.

The school provides a range of extra-curricular sports clubs. These encourage children to enjoy sport, and to develop their skills in sport specific areas.  Clubs are run by professional organisations/ coaches or members of staff.  We also employ sport coaches to engage in physical activity during lunchtimes, and this has been incredibly successful.
