French

Vision

Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things.  It is learning another way to think about things.
Flora Lewis
We aim to provide a strong foundation in French and generate enthusiasm and confidence that will encourage pupils to continue their language journey beyond their primary years. Our structured syllabus gives our pupils the greatest chance of success for the future.

The importance of French

Learning another language and the culture that goes with it, is one of the most useful things we can do to broaden the empathy; imaginative sympathy and cultural outlook of children.
Secretary of State for Education

Language- learning broadens the pupils' views and understanding of the world.  By opening children's minds to another way of thinking and expression, we are opening small doors that can lead to larger ones.  Learning a language to the depth we achieve at school makes a huge contribution to Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development.

French at Seaford Primary School

French is delivered by a specialist teacher and has a dedicated slot on the timetable in KS2. As well as teaching 'different words for the same things,' we introduce key grammatical concepts and cultural approaches.  Learning another language is not just words and phrases.  Our pupils are keen to learn more about life in France and beyond.  We achieve this through video footage and discussion.  They learn about linguistic concepts that do not exist in English.  The syllabus is ambitious but taught in a lively, engaging and accessible way with opportunities for role-play, bringing conversation to life.  it is very important that the atmosphere in each lesson is positive, safe and respectful.  Hesitant pupils are encouraged to try things out of their comfort zone without fear of failure.  We give all pupils the chance to enjoy success and a sense of achievement.  Most of or learning is speaking, listening and reading in various forms.  We give lots of support for occasional written tasks.  A popular activity among pupils is singing songs, which is easily differentiated and therefore accessible to all.
