PSHE
Vision of PSHE at Seaford Primary School
At Seaford Primary our curriculum, known as ‘Let’s Talk’, will empower children to cultivate healthy, respectful friendships while fostering personal resilience and character development necessary for navigating life’s challenges. Our dedicated staff stands ready to support each child in achieving their aspirations and nurturing a spirit of ambition.
Children will acquire essential skills to manage their mental health effectively. They will gain a comprehensive understanding of potential risks, learn how to seek help when needed, and apply their knowledge to make safe and informed decisions. Additionally, our curriculum addresses the vital concept of mental wellbeing, equipping children with the tools to care for themselves and to access support should mental health issues arise.
The importance of PSHE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an essential school subject that equips pupils with the critical knowledge, skills, and attributes needed to navigate their lives effectively, both in the present and for years to come. It serves as a foundation for personal development, fostering emotional intelligence, responsible decision-making, and an awareness of one's own health and well-being.
The 'Let's Talk' programme comprehensively addresses the statutory guidance set forth by the Department for Education, detailing the content that schools are required to implement from September 2020 onwards. This initiative ensures that the curriculum remains inclusive and relevant, covering vital topics such as relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE), and health education, as outlined in the DfE publication.
What does PSHE look like at Seaford Primary School?
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is delivered explicitly each week; however, its principles are seamlessly woven into a comprehensive whole-school approach. Our PSHE curriculum has been meticulously designed and tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of our pupils. Each term, a particular strand of the curriculum is taught across all year groups, ensuring that the content is progressive and age-appropriate, so pupils acquire deeper understanding and retention of the material.
Starting from Year 2, pupils are introduced to the practice of journaling, which fosters their independence and enhances their ability to reflect and self-regulate. This practice is a fundamental component of our curriculum, empowering students to make personal progress that significantly impacts their development as individuals.
The 6 strands of the PSHE curriculum are:
Term 1: Resilience
Term 4: Health Education
Term 2: Relationships
Term 5: Friendships
Term 3: Well-being
Term 6: Wider World
